Modernizing OpenEdge reports for critical inventory visibility
Overview
Joe Piper modernized a legacy OpenEdge reporting workflow so sales teams could access critical inventory details without manual cross-referencing or print-only outputs. The update replaced static reports with Excel-ready exports and standardized material data across key views.
The Challenge
Two reports in the Sales Management module created daily friction:
- Material grade and size were missing from both reports.
- The Committed Inv Detail report only printed to a spooler, blocking filtering and sorting.
The team needed consistent data visibility and a usable output format without disrupting OpenEdge workflows.
The Solution
We extended the legacy ABL codebase to standardize data access and modernize output streams.
Schema and Query Extension
We updated ABL queries to fetch Grade and Size from the material tables using job number relationships. Both reports now surface the same fields.
Output Stream Modernization
We mirrored the Claims Processing export logic so Committed Inv Detail generates CSV/Excel output, delivered via the AugEmail distribution system.
Outcomes
- Both reports now include Grade and Size automatically.
- Committed Inv Detail exports directly to Excel.
- Sales teams can filter and analyze inventory commitments immediately.
